We are seeking a Business Development Manager to enable the organisation to continue its excellent track record of securing research income. The role will have a particular focus on the business plans and objectives of the Biodiversity and Soils and Land Use (SLU) Science Areas, and will work within the wider UKCEH Business Development Team. Although primarily based at UKCEH HQ in Wallingford, Oxfordshire, the post holder will be expected to spend a proportion of their time at other UKCEH sites, through regular visits most notably Lancaster and Bangor, supporting Biodiversity and SLU staff members based at those sites.
Direct support for bidding
- Identify, prioritise and promote funding opportunities of relevance to Biodiversity and SLU, identifying issues such as UKCEH eligibility, funding model, application process and any issues of wider strategic significance
- Provide bespoke guidance to UKCEH scientists seeking funding sources for their ideas or scientific specialism using your knowledge of funders and customers, their priorities, and forthcoming opportunities
- Support scientists in the preparation and submission of high quality expressions of interest, pre-qualification questionnaires, grant proposals and tenders,
- For calls and opportunities with cross-Science Area relevance, work with fellow UKCEH Business Development Managers (BDMs) to coordinate activities across UKCEH to integrate and optimise bidding activity
Business planning and development
- Support the approach to medium-term income identification, planning and pursuit, through the Science area, and corporate business planning process. This includes:
- Lead market research into new customers and/or new opportunities for existing customers, including commercial entities, and prepare strategies for building those new business areas
- Monitor research programmes
- Identify and support the development of strategic partnerships through the facilitation of customer meetings, workshops and other promotional activities that lead to improved focus and presentation of the Science Areas.
Direct project support
- To provide a business development support role to relevant projects. This is likely to encompass activities such as stakeholder engagement, business viability assessment or knowledge exchange, and will comprise 20-30% of the role. The successful candidate will not be required or expected to lead their own science interests or projects.
Knowledge Exchange and Impact
- Support UKCEH to deliver knowledge exchange and impact activities that are strategically determined within the Science Area/Business Development team to include engagement with external audiences, commercial innovation interactions, and engagement as determined by science area needs.
Knowledge & Qualifications
- A good degree in an appropriate subject.
- A PhD or equivalent qualification or relevant demonstrated ability.
- Extensive working knowledge of one or more of the following: biodiversity, soils and land use-related environmental sectors, for example forestry, agriculture, nature conservation or ideally where these intersect e.g. Agri-environment.
- Evidence of continuing professional development and up to date knowledge of research in their field.
- Knowledge of current political debates in the environmental field, and an ability to identify connections between policy development, business needs, and scientific drivers.
Experience/Proven abilities related to the position
- Demonstrable competence and experience of undertaking business development activity within a scientific research or consultancy organisation.
- Strong capability to apply appropriate project management approaches, in a changing organizational context.
- Driven by strategic and targeted-oriented delivery of revenue to support research activities, including direct experience of proposal development and coordination.
- A proactive individual with excellent interpersonal skills, able to work seamlessly across personnel in research, policy and business environments.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
